More than 180 people joined new weekly touch football and netball sessions at the Cairns Esplanade courts last month.

The timing aligns with school holidays and the end of the national rugby league season, when families look for low-cost local options rather than travel teams. Council records show bookings at public ovals rose sharply after June 1, when several private facilities increased their fees.

One group meets every Tuesday evening near the corner of Spence Street and Grafton Street in Cairns North. Another runs Saturday morning drills at the old showgrounds site off Mulgrave Road in Westcourt. Both started with a single parent posting on a neighbourhood app and now draw players from Edge Hill and Bungalow.

Numbers on the ground

Cairns Regional Council data released last week list a 22 percent increase in casual oval permits between January and June this year. Average participant fees sit at $10 for juniors and $15 for adults, well below the $45 charged by some commercial academies. The same report notes that 14 new volunteer-run groups registered with the council since March.

Organisers keep costs down by sharing equipment bought second-hand and rotating coaching duties among parents. No player pays more than the weekly fee, and no one is turned away for late payment.

Next steps for locals

Registration for the next six-week block opens Monday at the Cairns North Community Centre on Draper Street. Sessions run from 5:30 pm to 7 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Details are posted on the council website and at the front desk of the Smithfield Sports Complex.
