Cairns Regional Council maintains eight free outdoor fitness circuits and gym stations across city parks, with the newest additions installed along the Esplanade in late 2025.

July marks the start of the dry season when temperatures stay below 28 degrees most days, drawing more locals outdoors before the wet returns in November. Rising private gym fees averaging 45 dollars a week have pushed residents toward these no-cost options near the CBD and northern beaches.

The Esplanade circuit runs from the Pier Markets end to the Lagoon, with pull-up bars, leg press machines and rowing stations spaced every 200 metres. Further north, the Anderson Park circuit in Edge Hill includes a 1.2 kilometre loop with resistance equipment and shaded benches for bodyweight drills.

Equipment and access details

Both sites sit within walking distance of Rusty's Markets and Cairns Base Hospital, letting users combine a session with fresh produce runs or post-workout checks at the hospital's community health drop-in. The council upgraded the Esplanade stations in March 2025 after recording 18,400 visits in the previous financial year.

Users report completing circuits in 35 to 45 minutes using the provided QR code maps that list 12 stations per location. No bookings are needed and equipment remains available from 5am until 10pm daily.

Practical steps for first visits

Check the Cairns Regional Council website for any temporary closures due to maintenance before heading out. Bring water and start on the flat Esplanade path if recovering from injury, then progress to the slight hills at Anderson Park. Local GPs at Cairns Base Hospital recommend these sites for patients seeking supervised outdoor activity through the hospital's free walking group that meets Tuesdays at 7am.
