Cairns United FC sits first in the Northern League after beating Townsville Rangers 3-1 at Barlow Park last night. The result stretched the side's unbeaten run to eight matches and lifted them four points clear of second place with five rounds left.

The timing matters because national finals qualifiers begin in three weeks. Clubs that finish top two earn automatic entry and a share of the $120,000 prize pool that the league distributes to cover travel and player allowances. Cairns United last reached the national stage in 2022 and finished sixth; a repeat appearance would mark the first time the club has done so on home soil support.

Training base and youth pathway

Players prepare at the Cairns Sports Precinct off Sheridan Street, where the club shares pitches with the Cairns Junior Soccer Association. The association runs after-school sessions at Trinity Beach fields every Tuesday and Thursday for under-14 squads. Several current first-team players came through those sessions, including defender Liam Torres who joined the senior roster in 2024.

Match-day crowds have averaged 2,450 this season, up from 1,920 last year. Gate receipts at Barlow Park now cover 60 percent of the club's operating costs, according to figures released by the Cairns Football Association last month. Season passes went on sale at $150 for adults and $80 for juniors, with sales through the association office on Grafton Street.

Next fixtures and ticket details

The side hosts Mackay Magpies on July 15 before travelling to Darwin the following weekend. Supporters can buy single-match tickets for $25 at the gate or $22 online via the club website. The association has also opened a waiting list for reserved seating at Barlow Park for the July 15 fixture, with places limited to 800.

Local schools near the Esplanade have been offered discounted group bookings for the match, part of an ongoing program that has brought 1,200 students to games since March. The next round of school allocations opens on July 10 through the association office.
