Cairns residents and visitors now have a clear rating system for local walking trails that sorts 12 paths by distance and difficulty level, with the shortest flat route measuring 1.8 kilometres and the longest challenging climb reaching 9.4 kilometres.

July marks the start of the dry season when cooler mornings draw more people outdoors for exercise, and Cairns City Council data shows a 22 percent rise in park permit applications compared with the same month last year as residents seek alternatives to indoor gyms after the recent Telstra network issues disrupted some fitness apps.

Two spots stand out in the new ratings. The Flecker Botanic Gardens loop along Collins Avenue covers 2.3 kilometres on mostly level ground and rates easy, with sealed paths that pass through rainforest sections and end near the visitor centre. Further out, the Mount Whitfield trail network accessed from the Edge Hill neighbourhood begins with a 4.7 kilometre moderate option that climbs steadily past eucalypt stands before descending toward the Cairns Base Hospital side of the hill.

Trail ratings by distance and challenge

The full list places the Esplanade waterfront path at the bottom end for distance at 3.1 kilometres and easy difficulty, while the longer Atherton Tablelands option near Lake Eacham stretches 9.4 kilometres and carries a hard rating due to uneven terrain and elevation gain. Council records from the 2025-26 financial year list 47,300 recorded visits across these sites, with the moderate Mount Whitfield route accounting for 18,900 of them.

Entry remains free at all listed locations, though the council charges $12 for parking at the Mount Whitfield trailhead on weekends. Rusty's Markets on Spence Street supplies fresh tropical fruit for post-walk recovery, with mangoes and pawpaw selling for $4 per kilogram this month.

Practical steps before heading out

Walkers should check the council website for any temporary closures after recent rain and carry at least one litre of water per person on routes longer than 4 kilometres. Those with existing health conditions are advised to consult a local medical professional at Cairns Base Hospital or their GP before attempting the harder grades. The next council-led guided walk on the moderate Flecker loop is scheduled for 18 July at 7 am, with registration open through the parks office on 1300 692 247.
